The beautiful and historic Swat Valley lies in the foothills of Hindukush mountain range in North West Frontier Province (NWFP), Pakistan, covering an area of 10,360 sq. kms.

The City of Saidu Sharif (226 K.Ms. form Islamabad, 117 K.Ms. from Peshawar) is the headquarters of Swat Valley. Mingora (3 K.Ms. from Saidu Sharif) and the towns of Madyan, Bahrain and Kalam, on Mingora-Kalam road along the Swat River are the major mass tourist destinations. Some of the other tourist attractions in the valley include Maindam, Marghuzar, Malam Jabba Ski Resort, Ushoo, Mahudand Lake, and Gabbral.

Swat is a typical mountain valley with its fair share of rivers, streams, beautiful lakes, green meadows, pine forests and snow-covered mountain peaks. Apart from its natural beauty Swat also has a long and rich history. The “Udyana (Garden) of the ancient Sanskrit literature, Swat remained a cradle of the Buddhist civilization from 3rd Century B.C. to 9th Century A.D. remnants of that civilization can be still be seen in the form of many archaeological sites and remains of the buildings, all over the valley and artifacts in the Swat Museum, Saidu Sharif. Alexander the Great, while crossing over to India in 327 B.C., through this valley, fought and won several battles with the local rulers of Swat.

Like many other mountain valleys in Pakistan, All major towns in Swat are being turned into concrete jungles, with buildings springing up everywhere, without any planning or control, to cater to the mass tourists form Pakistan and abroad, who flock the valley during summer.

There are several hotels, restaurants and rest houses at almost all the destinations mentioned above. Transport to Saidu Sharif/Mingora is easily available from Peshawar and Islamabad. Transport for further journey to destinations in Swat Valley can be arranged  from Mingora.
