Sharan

Sharan, (2400 meters) with thick pine forests, green meadows and sparkling streams, is a wilderness still in pristine state because very few tourist ever visit the place.  There was absolutely no one for miles around when I visited (in April) except for the staff of NWFP Forest Department's rest house where we were staying. The few local people who live at Sharan, shift to lower (and warmer) places during winter (this is the normal practice throughout the Kaghan Valley). The panoramic views from Sharan, of snow capped peaks all around, are spectacular. I particularly enjoyed looking down at meadows of Shogran, which looked like a tiny flat patch, precariously balanced among the mighty peaks.

The 16 kilometers dirt road to Sharan branches off form the main Mansehra-Naran highway at Paras (79 kilometers from Mansehra). There is an NWFP Forest Department's Rest House and a Youth Hostel in Sharan, where tourists can stay. Transport (4x4) to Sharan can be arranged from Balakot.
