Naran (approx. 2600 meters) – is situated in an opening between the mountains along River Kunhar. Naran is the central place for all tourist activities in the Kaghan Valley. Numerous treks start from Naran to almost all parts of the valley and are popular with trekkers from Pakistan and abroad. However, most of the tourists visiting Naran never get to see the treks and valleys around Naran, their visit is confined to Naran town, Saif ul Maluk Lake and Lalazar. Naran, being the centre of tourism in Kaghan Valley, is fast transforming into a concrete jungle with new hotels and restaurants being constructed at every available space.

Saif ul Maluk Lake (3212 meters), a water-filled volcanic crater, is about seven kilometers from Naran. It is accessible from Naran through a Jeep Road or several treks. I have been on a trek that starts from Naran goes up to Dana, a small meadow on the hilltop over-looking Naran, and than all the way up to Choora top (approx. 3,800 meters). The trek then descends towards, Saif ul Maluk lake which is on the other side of Choora Top.

On a sunny day, the blue water in the lake surrounded by green mountains, towered by snowcapped peaks, including Malka Parbat (5291 meters), the highest peak in Kaghan Valley, creates an awe inspiring view. The view is even better on a night with a full moon, the reflection of moonlight on the still water of the lake creates it's own magic.

Another popular tourist destination is Lalazar (3200 meters), approx. 21 kilometers from Naran, famous for its vast lush green meadows. The meadows are rapidly being converted into potato fields by the local farmers.

There are many hotels guesthouses, rest houses and a youth hostel in Naran, where tourists can stay. Tourist can stay at NWFP Forest Department’s Rest House at Saif ul Maluk and Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Rest House at Lalazar. There are also a couple of local hotels at both these places. Every kind of transport to Naran can be arranged at Mansehra and Balakot. Jeeps for travel to Saif ul Maluk Lake, Lalazar and beyond can be hired at Naran. The distance from Mansehra to Naran is 109 kilometers and from Balakot to Naran it is 85 kilometers
